Musculoskeletal Diseases and Lameness Evaluations

Like most equine veterinarians, we at the Salem Valley Veterinary Clinic have an abiding interest in equine lameness diagnosis and treatment.  This is an area of equine medicine that has its roots in ancient civilizations, and has become revolutionized by modern technology. But while high quality digital radiographs, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have greatly improved our ability to “see” musculoskeletal pathology, the methods of identifying lameness and localizing the site of injury has not changed significantly in the last 3 decades. This still requires a trained eye and diagnostic anesthesia (nerve blocks); so it is in a sense, still a blend of art and science.

Successful therapy of various musculoskeletal injuries/diseases is dependent on an accurate diagnosis, appropriate therapy and rehabilitation. Our goal as veterinarians is to provide our clients with high quality primary care, and to refer those patients that would benefit from advanced imaging and treatment modalities offered by a board certified surgeon or sports medicine specialist. From pre-purchase examinations to lameness and performance evaluations, we are prepared to provide our clients with digital radiography, ultrasonography, and up-to-date therapies for injuries or osteoarthritis.  With this as a base, we then work with a network of specialists to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan options.  We want your horse to be at the peak of comfort and fitness for as many years as possible.
